The old expressway through the Lotus Mountains, built early with low technical standards, offers poor comfort and safety, frequent accidents, and has become an economic bottleneck, urgently requiring expansion. As Guangdong's first mountainous expressway reconstruction and expansion project—a rare national benchmark—it involved multi-dimensional technical innovations to overcome complex terrain, ensure ecological integration, double capacity, reduce accidents, and boost the regional economy.

     Challenges included low old road standards needing major upgrades, narrow corridors, high fill-cut volumes, numerous constraints (railways, flood zones, military areas, utilities), and strict traffic maintenance.
