The Southern Jiangsu Canal stretches 212 km from the Jianbi Estuary of the Yangtze River in the north to the Jiangsu-Zhejiang border in the south, connecting the Yangtze River, Tai Lake, and Qiantang River systems. It carries freight transport for 13 provinces and municipalities, including Jiangsu, Shanghai, Shandong, Hunan, and Anhui.
The project faces challenges such as multiple constraints, long mileage, and frequent navigation congestion. Given the region’s economic development, dense population, and limited land resources, the design team adhered to principles of safety, practicality, economy, and aesthetics. They tailored revetment structures to local conditions, aiming to develop the canal into a "beautiful central axis" for Jiangsu that harmonizes history with modernity, culture with ecology, and nature with landscape.
With substantial shipping volume on the canal, the team introduced an innovative three-lane waterway design to fundamentally alleviate congestion and ensure safe, smooth navigation. This sustainable approach features a channel width exceeding 80 meters.
