Client: Construction Engineering Department of Chuanshuiwan Coastal Zone Ecological Protection and Restoration Project in Dongtai
Location: Dongtai City, Yancheng, Jiangsu
Area: 1250 hectares
Work Period: May 2022– Dec 2024
Services to Scope: Landscape Architecture Design, Ecosystem Rehabilitation
The Chuanshuiwan Coastal Wetland Restoration Project within China's Yellow Sea Migratory Bird Sanctuary (Phase I) World Heritage Site pioneers integrated ecological rehabilitation using hydrological restoration, micro-topography rebuilding, native vegetation recovery, bird habitat creation, and Spartina alterniflora control. It establishes coastal restoration benchmarks while enhancing global conservation visibility.
Key challenges involve balancing marine ecosystem rehabilitation with biodiversity preservation and invasive species management. Historical reclamation practices and Spartina encroachment have severely degraded Dongtai's coastal ecosystems, requiring nature-based solutions to restore native habitats and establish resilient biotic communities.
The design team implemented Nature-based Solutions (NbS) principles, creating multi-salinity zones and high-tide refuges that protect endemic species like Père David's deer while maintaining ecological balance through minimally invasive interventions.
